This project will explore how social aspects of group interaction and the physical affordances of interactive art technology may be exploited to enhance the participation of people with a disability in creative, artistic activity. While there is a significant body of research and practice focused on enhancing participation in physical activity in the community (e.g., through sport), there is a critical gap in our knowledge about how interactive arts can be used to improve universal outcomes and social inclusion. According to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), it is important for individuals to participate in physical, recreational and social life. The SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), which are action guidelines adopted by the United Nations in 2015, suggest action should be tackled under international cooperation. From this perspective, based on previous joint research between Ritsumeikan University, Japan and RMIT University, Australia, we will conduct participatory design workshops that enables healthy people and people with special needs to participate together in creative activities. We will develop interactive media art to promote the formation of diverse and inclusive societies in collaboration with community arts organizations in Japan and Australia. The results of our study will be disseminated through public performances that promote social inclusivity with supporting organizations for people with a disability.
