One of the central responsibilities of our global society is the recognition of the importance of human rights. Patients suffering from infectious diseases, survivors of such diseases, and their families often suffer discrimination in their communities due to prejudice and misinformation. A large outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever occurred in West Africa between 2014 and 2015, and more than 10,000 people were affected. Although it has been nearly two years since the end of the outbreak, survivors of Ebola and their families still suffer discrimination and persecution in their communities. Such discrimination is not only unacceptable on a humanitarian level, but it also impedes epidemiologic and scientific research. Therefore, in collaboration with the local nonprofit organizations in Sierra Leone, West Africa, the aim of this project is to construct a social system in which Ebola survivors do not become socially vulnerable and are guaranteed basic human rights. Construction of such a system would facilitate scientific research to develop countermeasures against Ebola. Specifically, we will attempt to construct a community that readily accepts Ebola survivors by developing and sharing social awareness programs designed to educate the local community about infectious diseases and public health. In addition, we will offer support to Ebola survivors to acquire vocational skills.
