Non-economic values are seldom valued in the economic society, and any activity is evaluated after having been converted to the one in the economic scale. Vitalization of local communities is often quantified by the economic indicators such as job creation in communities, profits of local industries and economic ripple effects of rituals. However, the non-economic values that increase vitality of communities such as conservation of local cultures and traditions, assistance to the citizens to live their fulfilling lives and ripening of pride to the community are essential for local communities. Especially in foods and agriculture, which used to be common in any local community, keys to the non-economic abundance that realizes sustainable local communities will be found.
     This research explores new values, for local communities, generated by abundance of foods and agriculture, aiming discovery and creation of new values that can define the future societies, where steady economic growth can no longer be expected. The study approach is to focus on the idea and the mechanism of CSA, which generates abundance in local communities especially in farms with centripetal force of foods and agriculture, to analyze why CSA is widely accepted in local communities, and to create new values brought by abundance of foods and agriculture.

This study aimed at exploring new value for local communities which is generated by richness in food and agriculture as well as discovering and creating new value that can define societies in the future, where we can no longer expect steadily growing economy. As a method of the study, I focused on philosophy and a system of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), which has created richness for local communities around farms with richness in food and agriculture as a centripetal force, and analyzed why CSA is widely accepted by local communities.
The survey method was as follows. First, I extracted activities concerning CSA through literature search and then conducted a hearing survey on eight of those activities, in which food and agriculture were positioned at the center of local communities. On the basis of the survey results, the positioning of food and agriculture in CSA (including philosophy and a role) and the centripetal force which contributed to CSA to be widely accepted were discussed with a multidimensional view of intellectuals and experts at study groups. On the basis of the discussion results, I constructed hypothesis about value generated by richness in food and agriculture to local communities and then verified it through a questionnaire survey in CSA members and discussion at study groups. Lastly, I investigated a new shape that a society should take, which could define future societies with new value.
As a result of the survey, the centripetal force of CSA was found in “social activities of farmers” in addition to high-quality agricultural crops. The value generated by richness in food and agriculture for local communities was found in farmers’ uneconomical activities that have a social nature related to food and agriculture. The uneconomical activities of farmers had resulted in a resolution for farmers’ economical issues. The consumers, i.e., members of CSA, had become sound in mind and body through the farmers’ uneconomical activities and had highly appreciated that. In gratitude for farmers’ uneconomical activities, the consumers had paid above-market rates for farm products. In fact, they had paid not for agricultural crops but for a value generated by richness in food and agriculture. The value had been defined by sense of common values between farmers and consumers.
As a society’s new shape that can define future societies, it is desirable that farmers not only grow crops efficiently with a technique but also conduct social activities. Farmers can provide higher values to local communities by sharing values with consumers and enriching the mind and the body with the value brought by richness in food and agriculture.
